Thought I would do another blog post with lots of exciting tech news. So, here is what I’ve been seeing over the past few days.
So, theres just a few bits of random news that I thought I would share with people. Have a great weekend guys!
Now, you may be thinking “Man alive…no posts for days, and now a post about that iPad thing.”. Well, yeah, I know, it is shocking. Sadly, there hasn’t been much for me to blog about. I’ve been trying to think of something else, and my mind has been mulling over whether or not to blog about this “iPad thing” constantly for the past week. So…I decided that I would hurry up and post about it so I can free my mind to think about other things. So, I’m just going to talk about random things about the iPad.
What the iPad is not:
The iPad is not an e-book reader. At all. Why would you buy an e-book reader rather than a laptop/netbook? The e-ink screen. It is nice to read, and it is very low power. Weeks of battery life and no strain on the eyes are the main reasons why you would buy an e-book reader. Now lets look at the iPad. No e-ink screen, wouldn’t be good in sunlight (I’d imagine) and would cause strain after reading lots. And battery life – 10 hours. That is not even a full day. It has less battery life than my phone, but it has a similar processor. Therefore, the iPad is not a replacement for an e-book reader. Don’t buy it to read books.
No, this is nothing about the iPad. Take a look at this link.
What do you think? Pretty nice in my opinion. Not a huge amount of information about it yet, and I’m assuming it’ll take longer to actually get over here to britain. But it shows that my perfect e-book reader is getting closer and closer.
Looks beautiful doesn’t it. The screen looks amazing. I’d have to see it in real life, but it looks like it could be as good as OLED. And in that case, it would be much better because OLED is rubbish in sunlight, e-ink is nicer on the eyes, and e-ink lasts much much longer.
It also is a really nice size. 13.1 inches is amazing for an ebook reader (about the size of an A4 piece of paper), and look at the size of that border, it is tiny! None of this 7″ screen with 2″ either side of border. Well played. It also has wifi and 3G connectivity, although no details on what networks you can use with it.
A couple of things I want to know about this:
So, all in all, this looks like a really really nice device that I would love to get my hands on. It has note-taking abilities, so it includes almost everything I want in an ereader. Maybe this is the device I will finally buy. Or maybe not…
Just thought I would put a wee blog post out to let people know that I am now officially engaged to Faye (@framemybear on twitter). I will post picture and explain how it happened another time, but I’m kinda busy just now
**EDIT** Spelling mistake – “not” changed to “now”
Ok, what is the point of patents? Now, here I thought patents were to stop big corporations stealing little peoples ideas and selling more than them and running them out of business. Is that, or is that not, the idea of patents?
Today I heard the news that Kodak are sueing Apple and RIM about image processing and image viewing. I, to be honest, think this is pretty pathetic. How are Apple and RIM doing image processing and viewing that Kodak do in their cameras going to affect kodak??? Would you use a cameraphone over a camera? And if so, would you buy a camera if they didn’t quite process them the same way? No you wouldn’t. How is this going to affect Kodak if they didn’t file this.
Software patents are so pathetic. Can you think of the last time you heard of a patent that was decent? I know that software patents aren’t valid in Europe (citation needed), but they are in general a stupid idea. The fact that you can patent an idea, for example apple getting a patent on docks, an unknown company getting a patent on podcasts and another company getting a patent on an xml-based way of saving word processing documents. Are any of these good? No…they are not. They are all stupid. What happens if I code something that is patented, that I honestly thought up all by myself. Does that mean I shouldn’t be allowed to use it? Really? What gives them the right to use it when I thought of it, just a wee bit later than them.
What do you think, internets? Do you agree?
**Edit** Just to prove my point, turns out apple just applied for a patent to “add a contact to a homescreen.” It probably won’t go through, as android and also symbian, already can do that. But still, it shows the patheticness of patents.
Discalaimer: Not safe for work, and not safe for minors or people who don’t like swearing. I like this song, this video is hilarious, but it does include the swearing bit in the song.
Now that I have this out of the way, lets chat about this. Many of you will know that there is an internet meme going around trying to get people to buy RATM’s Killing in the Name of to christmas number 1 so that Joe from x-factor doesn’t get there. It is nothing against Joe, it is against x-factor and the music industry. The fact that everyone has to be the same to be popular. It is rubbish, and I bought a copy of the song yesterday from amazon. My dad told me of someone he knows actually spent £15 buying lots of copies of the song.
Before I give you the video, here is a screenshot of youtube’s top music videos just now.
Now, do you notice anything interesting about that? There is 1 video of Joe’s song, and it is the spotlighted video. The only reason that Joe is on the top music videos on youtube is because they have obviously paid for that. Its stupid. Really is. Also, RATM are currently at the top of the itunes chart just now. I might post a blog post tonight after we hear the winner of the Christmas Number one. But now for the video. Remember, it has swearing in it, but it really is a hilarious video and very very well made.

Ok, so the world is abuzz with the official release of Windows 7. But, the question is, is it actually Windows 7? And if so, how did they get the numbering? Well, I have done a lot of thinking about this, and I decided that it really shouldn’t be. However, I found a blog post confirming why they called it Windows 7.
The very first release of Windows was Windows 1.0, the second was Windows 2.0, the third Windows 3.0.
…
after Windows 3.0 was Windows NT which was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Then came Windows 95, which was code versioned as Windows 4.0. Then, Windows 98, 98 SE and Windows Millennium each shipped as 4.0.1998, 4.10.2222, and 4.90.3000, respectively. So we’re counting all 9x versions as being 4.0.
Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and then we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release we didn’t’ want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility.
That brings us to Windows Vista, which is 6.0. So we see Windows 7 as our next logical significant release and 7th in the family of Windows releases.
So, according to Microsoft, they have only had 7 major versions of Windows. Counting all they said, it should be 12 of them? But no, its 7. Glad that makes sence. XP doesn’t count as a major version? I can understand Windows 98SE not being counted, and maybe NT, but in my opinion the rest should be. So, is it Windows 10? Ach well, glad it all makes sence.
However, that is confusing enough. But it does not end there. Windows 7 ACTUALLY isn’t Windows 7. It just gets worse and worse. It is actually Windows 6.1. So, Windows 7 IS a major version of Windows, but it also ISN’T.
Now, I know you all probably know most of this, but I am posting this to celebrate the release of Windows 7/10/6.1. Just thought you could all think of the lovely times you have had with Windows, and post your fun times in the comments.
My funnest time ever was using Windows ME. Nothing worked on it, and it drove me insane for over a year. Windows ME was what pushed me over to Linux. So, thank you Microsoft for showing me the light
A while ago, I blogged about why I don’t buy music downloads. Infact, I still buy Compact Disks. So, I decided that, instead of just moaning about how I can’t seem to get lossless download, I would do a bit of investigation, and find out if the market has changed at all, and if so, what the best place to get lossless downloads is.
I saw a magazine in a newsagents today, just before my train left, so I didn’t have time to check it out, but it said on its front page “Chrome OS vs Windows. We put them up against each other and see which is better.”
Now, this is just a short post to say what on earth were they thinking? How can they compare Windows with an operating system that we don’t even have any solid info on it. The ONLY info that we have is that it’ll use the Linux kernel. That is it. So how can you comment on it, and how it is?
They also claimed to have a screenshot of it, which suspiciously looked exactly like gOS. Now, am I missing something, or did Google not say they were making a “new windowing system”. Whether that means an actual windowing system (a competitor to X) or whether it meant just a new Window Manager, either way, the screenshot clearly was Gnome. And it was the same colour scheme, the same number and placement of panels, and the same dock at the bottom as gOS. So, no, it wasn’t Chrome OS, otherwise Google are being stupid.
So, what I am basically saying is, stop putting stupid information that is clearly fake on the front of your magazine just to sell more issues. It is pathetic.
